Admission Requirements for the BSW programs are outlined in the .

Admission into both the BSW as a First Degree and BSW as a Second Degree programs is competitive. We offer a limited number of seats (80 seats total for both programs combined). Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into a program.

Bachelor of Social Work as a First Degree

To apply to the BSW as a First Degree program, applicants must complete the admission requirements described at points 1 and 2 below.

1. Applicants must complete the following academic requirements (prerequisite courses, 30 credit hours) at 91��ɫ, or the equivalent from another institution.

Important notes for completing admission requirements:

a) To be admitted to the BSW program as a First Degree, students must complete all ten prerequisite courses with a minimum of 65% in each course and achieve an average of at least 65% in their last 30 credit hours completed.

b) SCWK 1710, the required introductory social work course, is typically offered online in the fall and winter semesters, but not in the intersession or spring semesters. Students interested in the BSW program who are unable to secure a seat in this course should contact bswprograms@mun.ca.

c) Learning Objectives (LOs) must be selected from the School of Social Work�s .

d) Courses may be chosen from offerings at both the St. John's and Grenfell campuses. Links to the course descriptions are located under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science sections of the University Calendar for St. Johns, and the under Course Descriptions section for the Grenfell campus.

e) To satisfy the requirement of two LO 1 courses, students must select from the list of approved Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) courses in the University Calendar.

f) A course can only be used to satisfy one LO requirement (e.g., ARCH/HIST 1005 can only be used to satisfy LO 1 or LO 3, but not both, even though it is found in both LO categories in the Complementary Studies Table.) Furthermore, students should take note of cross-listed courses like ARCH/HIST 1005, and ensure that these equivalent courses are completed only once as either ARCH 1005 or HIST 1005, as credit will only be granted for one or the other, but not for both.

g) It is strongly recommended, though not required, that students complete one or two LO 3 courses in the first year to satisfy one or two of the �any LO from 2 � 6� fields above, as two LO 3 courses will be required once in the BSW program, and this requirement tends to be more difficult to satisfy.

h) All required courses must be completed by the end of the winter semester in the calendar year in which you are seeking admission (e.g., Winter 2027 for a Fall 2027 start).

i) Applicants are encouraged to use the Course Selection for Prospective BSW (First Degree) Students form as a planning tool to ensure they meet the admission requirements.

Applicants who are currently completing or have completed courses at another institution (including the College of the North Atlantic) and who wish to use those courses toward the BSW admission requirements should carefully read the information at the link.

2. Applicants must complete a minimum of 60 hours of work, volunteer, or community involvement experience in human services that relates to social work. Applicants are required to submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form to indicate why they think they would be a suitable candidate for the BSW program and submit details of their work/volunteer experience and/or community involvement in human services. All experience hours must be completed by the March 1 application deadline.

Applicants are required to use the Personal Statement and Experience Form. Only this form will be accepted.

Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree

To apply to the BSW as a Second Degree program, applicants must complete the admission requirements described at points 1 and 2 below.

1. Applicants must have:

a) been awarded a Bachelor�s degree, or been approved by the end of the winter semester in the calendar year in which applicants are seeking admission (e.g., Winter 2027 for a Fall 2027 start).

b) achieved an average of at least 70% in the courses comprising the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study.

c) completed a minimum of 45 credit hours from one or more of the following disciplines: Anthropology, Archaeology, Communication and Media Studies, Criminology, Economics, English, Environment and Sustainability, Folklore, Gender Studies, Geography, History, Humanities, Law and Public Policy, Law and Society, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion and Culture, Social/Cultural Studies, Sociology, Sustainable Rural Communities, or other humanities or social science discipline completed at another university that is deemed by the Undergraduate Studies Committee or its designee to prepare students for the BSW program. Students need to have passed these courses, but not necessarily received a grade of 70% in each individual course.

d) completed the 9 credit hours of required prerequisite courses outlined below and must have achieved a minimum grade of 70% in each of these required prerequisite courses. The 9 credit hours of required prerequisite courses are:

a. 3 credit hours for Social Work 1710

b. 3 credit hours in developmental psychology, human development, and/or human behaviour beyond the introductory level. The following 91��ɫ courses count toward this requirement: PSYC 2021, 2025, 2121, 2122, 2125, 2621, 2622, 3051, 3520, 3822, 4050, 4051 (or the former PSYC 2010, 2020, 2030, 2100, 2800, 3050, 3100, 3533, 3640, 3650), SOCI 3120, 3290 (same as CRIM 3290)

c. 3 credit hours from the , Learning Objective Three.

e) All required courses must be completed by the end of the winter semester in the calendar year in which applicants are seeking admission (e.g., Winter 2027 for a Fall 2027 start).

f) Applicants are encouraged to use the Admission Checklist for Prospective BSW (Second Degree) Students form as a planning tool to ensure they meet the admission requirements.

Applicants who are currently completing or have completed courses/a degree at another institution (including the College of the North Atlantic) and who wish to use those courses toward the BSW admission requirements should carefully read the information at the link.

2. Applicants must complete a minimum of 300 hours of work experience/volunteer experience and/or community involvement experience in human services that relates to social work. Applicants must submit the Personal Statement and Experience Form to indicate why they think they would be a suitable candidate for the BSW program and submit details of their work/volunteer experience and/or community involvement in human services. All experience hours must be completed by the March 1 application deadline.

Applicants are required to use the Personal Statement and Experience Form. Only this form will be accepted.
