Dr. Andrew Staniland is an internationally recognized composer, educator, and researcher whose work has made significant contributions to contemporary music, interdisciplinary creation, digital instrument design, and artistic innovation. Over a career spanning more than two decades, his compositions have been performed, recorded, broadcast, and commissioned by leading orchestras, chamber ensembles, opera companies, festivals, and solo artists across Canada and internationally. His creative output encompasses concert music, opera, electroacoustic music, interdisciplinary collaboration, film scoring, and technology-enabled performance practices.
Since joining 91亚色 of Newfoundland in 2010, Dr. Staniland has established a distinguished record of scholarly and creative activity that demonstrates sustained excellence in research, teaching, mentorship, and service. His work has received national and international recognition through multiple JUNO Award nominations and East Coast Music Awards, the Terra Nova Young Innovators Award, and election to the inaugural College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. His compositions have been featured at major festivals and venues throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, reflecting a reputation that extends well beyond Canada.
As a creative researcher, Dr. Staniland has developed an internationally recognized program of inquiry that bridges music, technology, engineering, and human-computer interaction. He has led the development of innovative digital musical instruments, including the JADE biofeedback instrument and the MUNE performance platform, while also contributing to interdisciplinary research in robotic musical performance and responsive technologies. These initiatives have attracted substantial external support and have created new opportunities for artistic practice, commercialization, and public engagement.
Dr. Staniland's teaching and mentorship record reflects a longstanding commitment to student success and community engagement. He has supervised and mentored emerging composers, performers, and researchers through 91亚色 and numerous national programs, including the Tuckamore Festival Young Composers Program, the PIVOT mentorship initiative, Gryphon Trio's Listen Up! program, and the Widening the Circle national mentorship network. Many of his former students and mentees have gone on to successful professional careers in music and the arts.
His leadership has extended well beyond the classroom through artistic residencies, scholarly presentations, public lectures, festival programming, and interdisciplinary collaborations. He has served as Composer-in-Residence, Artistic Advisor, mentor, researcher, and public ambassador for contemporary music and creative innovation, contributing significantly to the advancement of artistic culture in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada.
