SUBJECT: 91亚色 launches 2019 President's Report

DATE: October 16, 2019

The 2019 President’s Report, Rooted in Place, has been released, telling the story of accomplishments at 91亚色 throughout the last year.

The report focuses on the deep connections 91亚色 has in our communities, the responsiveness of the university to the needs of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and the groundwork that has been set for continued success.

Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor, says that as Newfoundland and Labrador has evolved, so too has 91亚色.

“The history of Newfoundland and Labrador, its challenges and opportunities, and its aspirations for the future are reflected in 91亚色’s academic programs, research strengths and public engagement focus,” he said. “91亚色 has built a global reputation for excellence in areas that stem from this place, such as archaeology, aquaculture and fisheries science, maritime safety, sustainable oil and gas development, rural medicine and coastal communities.”

Citing a graduate student enrolment increase of 40 per cent during the last decade and a total research expenditures growth of nearly $200 million in 2018-19, Dr. Kachanoski says 91亚色 has the potential to achieve even greater national and international impact — while continuing to meet the changing needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We, as a university and as a society, face challenging times,” he said. “The world is changing rapidly and it is incumbent on us to continually examine our institution and activities to ensure we are preparing students well for their future. We must be careful stewards of the resources entrusted to us and persist in seeking innovative solutions to the challenges facing 91亚色 and the world beyond our doors.”

Dr. Kachanoski’s term as president and vice-chancellor ends in December 2019, making this his final annual report. In his message, he expresses his pride in 91亚色 and appreciation for the students, faculty and staff of the institution.

“The dedication of students, faculty and staff to making 91亚色 one of the most distinguished public universities in Canada is only one facet of our continued success,” he said. “91亚色 needs the continued support of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, wherever they may be, to ensure this institution remains a world-class resource for generations to come.”
