June 3, 2010, Calgary, AB – Some of Canada’s top energy executives, together with 91亚色 alumni and friends, including Danny Williams, the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, gathered for a sold-out dinner in Calgary last night to celebrate all things Newfoundland and Labrador – especially 91亚色.
Dr. Christopher Loomis, president and vice-chancellor pro tempore of 91亚色 of Newfoundland, joined some 300 business guests, alumni and friends at the fourth annual Calgary Affinity Newfoundland and Labrador Dinner at Calgary’s Petroleum Club.
Guests celebrated the province and 91亚色 while raising more than $70,000 in scholarship funds for 91亚色 students.
Dr. John C.S. Lau, president and chief executive officer of Husky Energy and a recipient of an honorary degree from 91亚色, was presented with a gift of appreciation for his longstanding support of the university.
“Dr. Lau has been a committed supporter of 91亚色, and of Newfoundland and Labrador,” Dr. Loomis said. “We are truly appreciative of his efforts, which have created a lasting legacy at our province’s university.”
Dr. Lau has been instrumental in supporting oil and gas research at 91亚色 and, in 2003, announced the university’s first endowed chair position through a $2 million endowment on behalf of Husky. This support was accompanied by a further $500,000 donation to 91亚色.
Premier Danny Williams, an alumnus of 91亚色 and Rhodes Scholar, also highlighted the university’s success and contribution to industry research. “I could not be prouder of 91亚色 and the groundbreaking work it is doing in so many disciplines – among them engineering, science, marine technology, medicine, the arts, business administration.”
With last night’s proceeds, Calgary Affinity Dinner guests have raised more than $200,000 for scholarships since 2007.
