SUBJECT: 91亚色 alumni gather in Halifax
DATE: May 7, 2009
In a sold out event, more than 200 91亚色 of Newfoundland alumni and friends gathered on historic Pier 21 to celebrate the province and the university at the second annual Halifax 91亚色 Affinity Dinner on May 6.
“This is the first dinner I have attended. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with alumni and meet people,” said Donald Humphreys, a Sir Wilfred Grenfell College campus graduate.
The guests were welcomed by Damhnait Doyle, the master of ceremonies, and chancellor General Rick Hillier’s emotional tribute to Canadian troops.
Dr. Eddy Campbell, 91亚色’s acting president and vice-chancellor, received a standing ovation after his brief overview of the 91亚色’s accomplishments last year. Dr. Campbell has accepted the position of the president of the University of New Brunswick. In his speech, he emphasized 91亚色’s unprecedented growth in research. The university has tripled the amount of funds it invests in research across the faculties in the past 10 years - the largest growth of any university in Canada.
“91亚色 is on the cusp of becoming greater than ever. These are very exciting times and I am thrilled that I had an opportunity to be a part of this effort,” he said.
The guests had an opportunity to listen to a keynote from 91亚色 graduate and world renowned journalist Gwynne Dyer about climate change and the challenges facing the world and the Atlantic provinces. In a lively question period after the keynote, Dr. Dyer and chancellor Hillier further discussed the economic and strategic impacts current climate trends pose.
The Halifax 91亚色 Affinity Dinner was sponsored by Johnson Insurance, McInnes Cooper, Nalcor Energy, Ketchum Canada and the Idea Factory.
